How Do I Track Traffic From ChatGPT in Google Analytics?

ChatGPT visits show up in Google Analytics 4 as referral traffic from chatgpt.com. Many of them are also tagged utm_source=chatgpt.com. To see all AI traffic in one place you build a custom channel group called "AI Assistants" that uses a simple regex to catch ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Claude.

That's the whole answer in a nutshell. The rest of this article walks you through it step by step so you can set it up today and stop guessing.

Why this matters for a small business

A lot of Aussie business owners tell me they "think" people are finding them through ChatGPT but they can't prove it. Fair enough. GA4 doesn't give you an AI report out of the box and it lumps those visits in with every other referral. So the traffic is there but it's hiding in a long list next to Facebook, your local directory and the odd spam site.

Once you pull it out into its own channel you can see how many people come from AI tools, which pages they land on and whether they actually enquire or buy. That's the bit that matters. Visits are nice but leads pay the bills.

Step-by-step: finding and tracking AI traffic in GA4

Step 1. Check what's already there

Open GA4 and go to Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition. The default table shows "Session primary channel group". Click the drop-down above the first column and change it to Session source / medium.

Now type "chatgpt" in the search box above the table. If you see a row like chatgpt.com / referral you've already got ChatGPT traffic. Try "perplexity", "gemini" and "copilot" too. Write the numbers down for the last 90 days so you have a starting point.

Don't panic if the numbers are small. For most small businesses they are right now. What you care about is the trend over time.

Step 2. Use this regex to catch every AI source

Regex is just a short pattern that matches lots of words at once. You don't need to understand how it works. Copy this one:

chatgpt|openai|perplexity|gemini|copilot|claude

Paste it into the search box in the Traffic acquisition report and GA4 will show every source that contains any of those words. If you want to be a bit more thorough you can use this longer version, which also picks up a few less common tools:

.*(chatgpt|openai|perplexity|gemini|bard|copilot|claude|anthropic|deepseek|you\.com|meta\.ai).*

Keep this pattern handy. You'll use it again in the next step.

Step 3. Build an "AI Assistants" channel group

This is the step that makes the biggest difference. A custom channel group tells GA4 to treat AI tools as their own channel instead of burying them in Referral.

  1. Click Admin (the cog in the bottom left corner).

  2. Under Data display choose Channel groups.

  3. Click Create new channel group and name it something like "Default + AI".

  4. Click Add new channel and name it AI Assistants.

  5. Set the condition to Source > matches regex and paste the regex from Step 2.

  6. Save the channel.

  7. Now drag AI Assistants so it sits above Referral in the list.

That last part is important and it's the one most people miss. GA4 checks channels from top to bottom and puts each visit in the first one that matches. If Referral sits above your AI channel then ChatGPT visits get grabbed by Referral first and your new channel stays empty.

Save the group. GA4 applies custom channel groups to past data as well so you should see history straight away.

Step 4. View your AI channel in reports

Go back to Traffic acquisition. Click the drop-down above the first column again and pick your new channel group. You'll now see "AI Assistants" sitting as its own line next to Organic Search, Direct and the rest.

From here you can see sessions, engaged sessions, engagement rate and key events (GA4's name for conversions) for AI traffic. Compare that to your Organic Search line. In a lot of cases AI visitors are fewer but more engaged because they've already been "sold" by the answer they read.

Step 5. Build an exploration for landing pages and conversions

The standard reports are fine for a quick look but an exploration lets you dig in properly.

  1. Go to Explore and start a Blank exploration.

  2. Under Dimensions add Session source / medium and Landing page + query string.

  3. Under Metrics add Sessions, Engaged sessions and Key events.

  4. Drag Landing page into Rows and Sessions and Key events into Values.

  5. Add a filter where Session source / medium matches regex and paste your AI regex.

Now you can see which pages AI tools send people to. This is gold. It tells you which content the AI models trust enough to recommend and it often surprises people. It's usually not your homepage. It's the detailed service page or the article that answers one question really well.

Step 6. Set a monthly check

Put a 15 minute reminder in your calendar once a month. Look at AI sessions, top landing pages and key events. Regularity is the key here. A single month tells you very little but six months tells you a story.

Why your numbers look low

Yes, GA4 can see AI traffic. But it can't see all of it. It only knows a visit came from ChatGPT when the browser passes that information along. Plenty of visits don't.

If someone uses the ChatGPT phone app and taps your link it often opens in a way that sends no referral data. That visit lands in Direct. If someone copies your business name out of a ChatGPT answer and pastes it into Google it shows up as Organic Search or Direct.

If they just remember your name and type in your URL a week later it's Direct again.

So the AI number in GA4 is the floor, not the ceiling. The real influence of AI on your business is bigger than what you see. That's why it pays to also ask new customers how they heard about you and to watch your branded search and direct traffic over time.

What GA4 can't tell you

GA4 tells you that someone came from ChatGPT. It won't tell you what they asked ChatGPT. There's no prompt data, no question text and no way to see the answer they read before clicking. OpenAI simply doesn't pass that to websites.

If you want to know which questions your business shows up for you need a different approach. We cover that in Can I see which prompts my business appears in?. You'll also want to decide which numbers to report on beyond visits, which is what What KPIs should I track for AI search? is about.

Common questions

Is ChatGPT traffic counted as organic in GA4? No. By default GA4 counts chatgpt.com visits as Referral traffic, not Organic Search. If you set up the AI Assistants channel group above Referral it moves into its own channel instead. Some visits influenced by ChatGPT still show as Organic or Direct when people search your name afterwards.

Can I see the prompt someone typed into ChatGPT? No. ChatGPT doesn't share prompts or conversations with websites, so GA4 only sees the source. To work out which prompts you appear in you need to test a list of questions yourself or use a prompt tracking tool. See Can I see which prompts my business appears in?

Do I need Google Tag Manager to track AI traffic? No. If GA4 is already installed on your site you can do everything in this guide inside GA4 itself. The channel group and exploration don't need any code changes.

How do I track Google AI Overviews traffic? Clicks from Google's AI Overviews come through as normal Google organic traffic so they won't show in your AI Assistants channel. For that you need Google Search Console. See Does Search Console show AI Overview traffic?

Where to from here

Setting up the channel takes about 20 minutes and then you've got a clear view of AI traffic every month. The next step is turning those visits into a number your business cares about in AI search visibility.
