How Much Does AI Search Optimisation Cost?

AI search optimisation, sometimes called GEO, usually costs between $1,500 and $5,000 a month for a small Australian business. That's the honest range for a Gold Coast tradie, cafe, clinic, accountant or retailer.

You can also spend $500 a month. You can spend $25,000 a month. Both ends exist and both make sense for someone. The trick is knowing which one you actually need, and being able to spot the quote that's priced on hype instead of work.

There's no fixed price for this. Anyone who gives you one before asking about your business is guessing.

Why the price range is so wide

AI search optimisation isn't one job. It's a bundle of jobs, and you only pay for the ones you need.

Some businesses need their Google Business Profile tidied up and a handful of suburb pages written. That's a small job. Others are fighting national competitors across five cities with hundreds of pages. That's a big job, and the hours involved look nothing alike.

The range isn't a pricing trick. It reflects how much real work your situation needs.

The price ranges in plain numbers

These figures come from published 2026 agency pricing research. Keep one thing in mind. Most of these studies come from American agencies and their numbers are in US dollars. Australian SEO pricing from local agencies sits in a similar band once you allow for the currency.

If you own a plumbing business on the Gold Coast with one van and a website, the entry or growth level is your lane. If you run a dental group with four clinics from Southport to Coolangatta, you're in the middle tiers because each location needs its own work.

What you're actually paying for

Strip the packaging off and you're buying a few concrete things. If a quote doesn't line up with this list, ask why.

  1. An audit. Someone checks whether AI tools name you now, and which competitors get named instead.

  2. Content work. Pages written or rewritten to answer real customer questions in plain language.

  3. Technical fixes. Schema markup, site structure, crawlability. Boring work. It matters.

  4. Profile and listing repairs. Your Google Business Profile plus the directories that mention you.

  5. Authority building. Getting mentioned on other sites. Local media, clubs, suppliers, industry bodies.

  6. Tracking and reporting. So you can see whether any of it worked.

Six items. The cheap quotes usually cover two of them. The expensive quotes often pile on tools you'll never open.

Yes, you can do some of it yourself. Here's what that costs

If you're willing to do the work, you can go a long way on your own for the price of a software subscription. AI visibility tracking tools start around $150 a month and go up from there.

But be clear about what you're taking on. The tools show you the gap. They don't close it. Someone still has to write the pages, fix the schema and chase the mentions. That someone is you, and your time isn't free.

For a one-person business, DIY is a fair call. For a business doing decent revenue, the hours you'd spend are usually worth more than the fee you'd pay an agency.

What pushes the price up

Competition is the big one. A plumber in Nerang has an easier fight than a cosmetic clinic on the Gold Coast strip. More competitors means more content and more mentions to earn your place in the answer.

Then there's the state of your current setup. A clean modern website needs less work than a ten year old site that hasn't been touched. Fixing the foundation is often the biggest line item and nobody enjoys paying for it.

Number of locations matters too. Four clinics need four sets of pages, four profiles and four review streams. That's four times the work, roughly.

Your own goals matter as well. Tracking your name in two AI tools is cheap. Tracking it across six tools with monthly competitor comparisons costs more because someone has to run it.

The part most quotes won't tell you

Here's where I'll be blunt. If the price looks too cheap, that fee is buying you something that won't work.

You can't deliver quality content, technical fixes and ongoing tracking for a few hundred dollars a month. The hours don't add up. What you get at that price is either automated filler or a report you could have pulled yourself. Some operators publish the same templated pages across dozens of businesses, and those pages do nothing for anyone.

I've seen businesses pay twice. Once for the cheap provider, then again to clean up the mess. The cheap option is frequently the most expensive one.

The other side of that coin is real too. A $25,000 a month program offered to a business with one location and eight staff is a waste of money. Big numbers don't equal big results. They equal big invoices.

What should a Gold Coast business actually budget?

Here's a starting point, based on what a genuinely useful program costs to deliver.

  • One location, one service, low competition. $1,000 to $1,500 a month gets a solid foundation plus ongoing content.

  • One location, competitive trade or retail. $1,500 to $3,000 a month. This is where most Gold Coast SMEs land.

  • Two to five locations. $3,000 to $8,000 a month depending on how many suburbs you're covering.

  • Standalone audit, if you just want to know where you stand. Expect $2,000 to $5,000 as a one-off.

Set the number before you take a proposal and stand your ground on it. There will always be a provider happy to spend more of your money.

How to tell if a quote is overpriced

Ask these questions. The answers say more than the price does.

  1. What exactly am I getting each month? Content, technical work, mentions, reporting. Get it in writing.

  2. Which prompts will you track? Real customer questions, not vanity terms.

  3. Who writes the content? A person with industry knowledge or a tool with a template.

  4. How will you report it? You want visible prompts, named competitors and clear numbers.

  5. What happens if nothing changes in six months? A straight answer here tells you plenty.

  6. Why does it cost this much? If they can't explain the hours behind the fee, the fee isn't built on hours.

Six questions. Five minutes. They'll separate the operators from the packagers.

What to do this week

  1. Decide your monthly number before you talk to anyone. Write it down.

  2. Check whether your Google Business Profile is complete. That's free and it's your biggest lever.

  3. Search your trade plus your suburb in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google. Note who gets named.

  4. If you only want to know where you stand, price a one-off audit rather than a retainer.

  5. Ask any provider for the six answers above in writing.

That's a week of sensible homework. Nothing on that list costs money.
