How to Get Business Recommended by AI Assistants

The short answer

AI assistants recommend local businesses that turn up in a few trusted places. The big ones are your Google Business Profile, your reviews and your own website. When all three say the same thing about you, AI tools start repeating your name. When they don't, you stay invisible no matter how good your work is.

That's the whole game in one paragraph. The rest of this article breaks it down for Gold Coast businesses, suburb by suburb.

Why "near me" works differently in AI

When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews for the "best plumber near me", the answer doesn't come from your website alone. The AI pulls from business listings, review sites, online directories and pages that talk about your area. It then writes one short answer with a couple of business names in it.

Here's the Gold Coast problem. Our city is long and thin. Someone in Coomera and someone in Coolangatta live about 60km apart. They both type "near me". If your profile and your content only ever say "Gold Coast", you're trying to beat hundreds of businesses across the whole strip.

You want AI to know your suburb, not just your city.

What AI actually checks before it names you

There's no secret setting you switch on. AI tools look at the same signals a careful customer would look at.

  1. Your Google Business Profile. Name, address, phone, hours, categories, services.

  2. Your reviews. How many, how recent, how specific.

  3. Your website. Especially pages that name your suburbs and your services.

  4. Other sites that mention you. Directories, local news, supplier pages, industry bodies.

  5. Whether all of those agree with each other. Mixed signals kill your chances.

If those five line up, you're in the mix. That's it.

Does your Google Business Profile affect your AI visibility?

Yes, and it's the single biggest lever most Gold Coast businesses have. Your Google Business Profile is the file Google already trusts about your business. AI tools lean on it heavily for anything local.

If your profile is thin, out of date or wrong, you're feeding the machines bad information. They'll happily pass that bad information on to your customers.

How to optimise your Google Business Profile for AI search

Work through this list once, then keep it tidy.

  1. Use one exact business name everywhere. Same name, same spelling, on your site, your profile, your invoices and every directory.

  2. Fix your address and phone. One address. One main phone number. Old numbers on old listings confuse AI and customers alike.

  3. Pick the right primary category. "Plumber" beats "Contractor". "Dentist" beats "Health Service". Add a couple of secondary categories that match real work you do.

  4. Write a description that names your suburbs. Two or three suburbs you actually serve, not a list of every postcode in Queensland.

  5. List your services one by one. Emergency call outs, hot water repairs, blocked drains. Simple names people actually search.

  6. Add real photos. Your ute, your team, finished jobs. Photos of stock models from the internet don't help you.

  7. Get reviews coming in every week. A steady trickle beats one big burst.

  8. Reply to every review. Short, human and calm. Even the rough ones.

  9. Post an update once a month. A job you finished or a tip for locals. It proves your profile is alive.

  10. Check your hours. If AI tells someone you're closed on a Saturday when you're open, that's lost work.

Ten items, one afternoon. Most Gold Coast businesses haven't done all ten.

How much do reviews really matter?

A lot, but not the way most people think. Volume alone doesn't win. AI tools and customers both care more about how recent your reviews are and what they actually say.

Forty reviews that mention "Burleigh Heads deck rebuild" will do more for you than 200 reviews that say "great job thanks". Reviews that name your suburb and your trade are the ones AI can use.

Two things to avoid. Don't buy reviews. Don't pressure customers into writing nice ones in front of you. Both backfire, and Google is good at spotting patterns.

Ask for a review the same day you finish the job, while the customer is still happy. That's all it takes.

How do I show up when someone asks AI for the "best [trade] near me"?

You need to do three things well.

Say what you do and where you do it, in plain words. On your home page, not buried on a contact page. "We're a family plumbing business working across Robina, Varsity Lakes and Burleigh" beats "providing quality solutions to valued clients".

Have a real page for each suburb you serve. Real content about real jobs in that area. AI can tell a template with the suburb swapped out, and so can your customers.

Get mentioned on other sites. Local news, sporting clubs you sponsor, suppliers, industry directories, a chamber of commerce. These mentions tell AI you're a genuine local business and not a page that appeared last week.

That's the combination. AI names businesses it can find in more than one place.

How do I get mentioned for a specific suburb or city?

Pick the suburbs you actually work in. Then build mentions around them.

  • Write a page for each main suburb, with jobs you've done there.

  • Sponsor a local club or event and get listed on their page. Coomera junior footy, Palm Beach nippers, whatever fits.

  • Get quoted in local media. Reporters need tradies, accountants and local experts to comment on things.

  • Join the local chamber or business group. Memberships show up online.

  • Ask suppliers to list you as an installer, stockist or partner.

  • Add your suburb to your Google Business Profile description and to the footer of your site.

Do this for four or five suburbs and stop. Ten suburbs done badly is worse than four done well.

Should I build location pages to show up in AI search?

Yes, but do it properly. This is where a lot of Gold Coast websites go wrong.

Location pages work when each one has something real on it. Things like a map, a genuine job story, a testimonial from a customer in that suburb, the services you do there and a few questions and answers.

Location pages fail when someone generates 60 of them by swapping the suburb name. Google has been demoting thin pages like that for years, and AI tools skip them too. A site full of them can drag down the pages that were working.

So the rule is simple. Fewer pages, more substance. Five to ten solid suburb pages for a small business is a good target.

How long does this take?

Months, not weeks. Say that plainly because plenty of people online won't.

Your Google Business Profile changes can show up in a few weeks. Review momentum takes a few months of steady asking. Suburb pages and outside mentions usually take three to six months of consistent work before AI answers start including you.

Anyone offering overnight results in AI search is selling you something they can't deliver. The work is real, and so is the wait.

What to do this week

  1. Search your trade plus your suburb in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google. See who gets named.

  2. Open your Google Business Profile and fix the address, phone, hours and categories today.

  3. Ask your last five customers for a review that names the job and the suburb.

  4. Pick your four best suburbs.

  5. Check your home page says what you do, where you work and who for.

That's a solid week of work. None of it is technical.
