Can I See Which Prompts My Business Appears In?

Not directly. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google don't share the prompts people type with businesses. You can get close though. Build a list of 20 to 50 questions your customers actually ask, test them regularly in each AI tool and record where you appear. You can do this by hand or use a prompt tracking tool.

Myth vs Reality

Myth: "There's a dashboard somewhere that shows every ChatGPT question my business appeared in." Reality: There isn't. Not from OpenAI, not from Google and not from anyone else. Any tool claiming to show you real user prompts is either guessing or estimating.

Myth: "If I check ChatGPT once and see my business, I'm sorted." Reality: AI answers change every time you ask. You might show up on Monday and vanish on Tuesday for the same question. One check tells you almost nothing.

Myth: "Prompt tracking tools tell you what customers are searching for." Reality: They tell you how AI tools answer the prompts you give them. That's useful but it's not the same thing. The quality of the result depends on the quality of your prompt list.

With that cleared up, let's work through the questions people ask us most.

Why isn't there a "Search Console for ChatGPT"?

With Google search you get Search Console. It shows the searches your site appeared for, how often and how many people clicked. People naturally expect the same thing for ChatGPT.

The problem is that AI prompts are very different to search keywords. A Google search is usually three or four words. A ChatGPT prompt can be a whole paragraph with personal details in it. Something like "I'm a single mum in Penrith with a leaking roof and not much money, who should I call?" OpenAI treats those conversations as private, so sharing them with businesses would be a privacy mess. On top of that every answer is generated fresh, so there's no fixed "ranking" to report the way Google has.

Google is a bit different. Clicks and impressions from AI Overviews do appear in Search Console. But they're mixed in with normal search data. We explain that in Does Search Console show AI Overview traffic?

So what can I actually see?

You can see two things. The first is the visits AI tools send to your site, which shows up in Google Analytics. Set that up using How do I track traffic from ChatGPT in Google Analytics? It tells you which pages people land on. But not what they asked.

The second is how AI tools answer the prompts you choose to test. That's what the rest of this article is about.

How do I build a prompt list?

Aim for 20 to 50 prompts. Fewer than 20 and you'll miss things. More than 50 and you probably won't keep testing them every month, which defeats the purpose.

Pull them from three places.

Customer questions. Look at your emails, enquiry forms, Google reviews and Facebook messages. Write down the questions people ask before they buy. "Do you do same-day repairs?" "How much does a bathroom reno cost in Adelaide?"

Sales calls. Ask whoever answers your phone what people say in the first 30 seconds. Those opening lines are close to how people talk to ChatGPT.

Your keywords. If you've done SEO you already have a keyword list. Turn each keyword into a natural question. "Accountant Parramatta" becomes "Who's a good small business accountant in Parramatta?"

Then mix the types of prompts. Include some that name your suburb or city, some that compare options ("what's better, X or Y?"), some that ask for recommendations ("best", "top", "most reliable") and a few that mention your business name directly so you can check the AI describes you correctly.

How do I test prompts by hand?

Manual testing is free and honestly it's the best way to start because you get to read the answers yourself. A few rules make it far more reliable.

Log out or use a private window. ChatGPT and Gemini remember things about you. If you've been chatting about your own business it'll be more likely to mention you. That's not what a stranger sees.

Vary the wording. Ask the same question two or three different ways. Real people don't all type the same thing.

Think about location. AI tools often use your rough location. If you're testing from Sydney for a business in Perth the answers may be skewed. Add the suburb or city into the prompt to keep it fair.

Test across tools. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Overviews all give different answers. Your customers use all of them.

Record everything. Use a simple sheet with date, tool, prompt, whether you were mentioned, whether you were cited with a link, your position and who else showed up.

Why do I get different answers every time?

AI tools don't look up a fixed answer. They build a new one each time and there's a bit of randomness baked in. They also update what they know and which websites they search on a regular basis.

That means you need to sample. Run each prompt two or three times per session and note how often you appear. If you show up in two out of three runs that's a 67% hit rate for that prompt, which is far more useful than a simple yes or no. Then repeat the whole thing monthly so you can see a trend.

This is also why you should never panic over one bad result. Yes, it's annoying when you disappear from an answer. But one result is noise. Three months of results is a signal.

What about prompt tracking tools?

Manual testing gets tedious once you're past about 20 prompts across five tools. That's where tracking tools come in. They run your prompt list automatically on a schedule and give you reports. Here are the main types you'll come across.

Dedicated AI visibility platforms such as Profound and Peec AI are built specifically for tracking brands in AI answers. They tend to offer detailed reporting and competitor comparisons and they're priced more for marketing teams and agencies.

Lighter monitoring tools such as Otterly focus on running a prompt list and tracking mentions and citations over time. They're often a better fit for small businesses that just want the basics without the extra features.

AI features inside SEO suites such as the Semrush AI toolkit add AI visibility tracking to tools many marketers already use. Handy if you're already paying for the suite.

All of these change quickly so check current features and pricing before you sign up. And remember the tool only tests the prompts you give it. A smart prompt list in a basic tool beats a lazy list in an expensive one.

What should I do with the results?

Turn them into numbers you can track. Mention rate, citation rate and share of voice are the big three and we explain each in What KPIs should I track for AI search?. Then compare yourself with the businesses you lose work to, which we cover in How do I benchmark my AI visibility against my competitors?

Frequently Found Questions

Can I see the exact prompts people use to find my business in ChatGPT? No. OpenAI doesn't share user prompts or conversations with businesses. You can only test your own list of likely prompts and see how ChatGPT answers them.

How many prompts should I track? Between 20 and 50 suits most small businesses. That's enough to cover your main services and locations but small enough to test every month.

Why does ChatGPT mention my business sometimes but not other times? AI tools generate a fresh answer each time and include some randomness. Test each prompt two or three times and look at how often you appear rather than relying on one result.

Are AI prompt tracking tools worth paying for? They're worth it once manual testing takes too long, usually past 20 prompts across several AI tools. Start by hand so you understand the answers, then automate.
